Pre Op Instructions

You will get texts from our office and Blue Ridge Surgery Center at least 1 day before surgery that have your arrival and surgery time. If you do not get this information by 2 pm the day prior to surgery, Call 919-781-4311 and press option 1 to get your surgery time.  


FAILURE to READ and FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS can result in YOUR  PROCEDURE  BEING CANCELED. 


  • Discontinue blood thinning medications such as ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, herbal supplements, multivitamins, fish oil, and Vitamin E at least 2 weeks prior to surgery, unless your PCP, cardiologist, or internal medicine physician instructs otherwise. Always consult with your PCP, cardiologist, or internal medicine physician before stopping any medications. If there is any listed medication that you are unable to stop, be sure you inform us. 

  • Pick up any prescribed medications from your pharmacy so they are ready for use post operatively.

  • Do not drink alcohol for at least 7 days prior to surgery. 

  • WRITTEN NOTIFICATION IS REQUIRED from your prescribing physician to discontinue the following medications. We will help obtain approval to hold these medications. Do not stop these medications unless directed by our office or your prescribing doctor.


    Coumadin – for 3 days prior to surgery   Eliquis- for 2-4 days prior to surgery
    Plavix – for 7-10 days prior to surgery Xarelto- 2-4 days prior to surgery
    Lovenox – for 1 day prior to surgery Savaysa- 2-4 days prior to surgery

           Pradaxa- for 2-5 days prior to surgery Aspirin 7-10 days prior to surgery


  • Depending on your medical history, we may need to obtain medical clearance from your primary care doctor or cardiologist.

  • Please call and speak with a pre-op nurse at 919-781-4311 at least 2 days prior to your surgery. The pre-op nurses can help instruct you on which medications to take the day of surgery. If you have medications to take the day of surgery, please follow the instructions provided by Blue Ridge Surgery Center pre-op nurses.

  • DO NOT eat anything after midnight before your procedure. Clear liquids may be ingested up to TWO HOURS prior to surgery ARRIVAL TIME.  Clear liquids include: water, juice (without pulp), carbonated beverages, sports drinks, clear tea and black coffee (without milk, cream or artificial creamers). Broth is not allowed. 

  • To minimize risk of infection, shower the morning of your surgery. Do not wear makeup or face cream.  Do not wear contact lenses. Please remove any lash extensions prior to surgery. Please remove any jewelry to avoid burn risk.

  • Wear comfortable clothing. A shirt with buttons or zippers is recommended so it is easier to change into a gown.


Note: It is the policy of Blue Ridge Surgery Center that you must have a responsible adult bring you to the surgery center, stay there, and drive you home. You and your guest should plan to be at the surgery center for at least 3 hours. You must also arrange for a capable adult to stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Note: Per Surgery Center policy, filming and photography are not allowed inside the facility to protect patient privacy and comply with HIPAA.
