Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower Blepharoplasty Lower Eyelid Surgery Raleigh

Notice the puffiness of each lower eyelid. This is due to orbital fat protruding and is a common concern for many patients. While some patients are born with puffy lower eyelids, this is a problem that more commonly develops over time. This patient underwent transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty (scarless approach through the inside of the eyelid) to address the puffiness. After surgery, the puffy areas are no longer visible and the patient has a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

The prominence of orbital fat showing through the lower eyelids can significantly impact one's appearance. Some are born with noticeably puffy lower lids. More commonly, this condition develops over time as tissues in the eyelid become loose, allowing the fat to shift forward. This can make a person look tired.

Some patients with such changes may candidates for tear tough filler injections. However, others will not get optimal results with filler, and thus, surgery is a better option. With a lower lid blepharoplasty, fat in the lower eyelids can be removed through an incision on the inside surface of the eyelid. If there is excessive skin in the lower lid, a separate incision is sometimes made just below the lashes to remove a small amount of excess skin. In some cases, the lower lid also needs to be tightened through a small incision near the outer corner of the eyelids or through an upper eyelid incision in those undergoing upper blepharoplasty at the same time as lower blepharoplasty. Dr. Mettu performs a careful examination to determine the best approach for each patient. The goal of surgery is obtain a natural look that leaves one appearing youthful and well rested.
