Tips to Improve Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Eyelid surgery is generally considered to be a relatively low-impact procedure, with many patients finding that they are able to recover in a quicker window than with most major procedures. However, like most operations, the recovery process can be expedited by taking a few things into consideration. Below we cover tips to improve eyelid surgery recovery.

Tips to Improve Eyelid Surgery Recovery

If you have a lower eyelid surgery planned and would like to know how to make your recovery period as quick as possible, then take a look over these tips on how to minimize the amount of time you’ll have to spend in this vulnerable state.

1.  Plan Ahead

Block off the time you’re going to need in advance. This could look like any number of things, from taking the necessary time off of work and school to arranging for childcare. Most commonly, patients take 1 week off from work. Though, it takes two weeks on average to become socially presentable.

2.  Follow Your Doctor’s Advice

Once your surgery is complete, Dr. Mettu will likely give you instructions and advice to follow to maximize your recovery period.

Following these instructions to the letter will give you a big advantage in terms of your recovery, and should be considered essential.

3.  Don’t Get Discouraged

Results are not immediate. There may be significant swelling and bruising following surgery and it will take time to see results. Understanding this and knowing that this time period will pass is essential for keeping a positive attitude.

4.  Protect Against The Sun

Another essential step is to avoid sun exposure on any skin incisions if applicable (some surgeries do not have skin incisions but have incision on the inside of the eyelids). Sun exposure can make scars more prominent. Sun protection gear such as hats, sunglasses, and strong sunblock can all aid against damage from the sun.

5.  Get Plenty of Rest

Rest is the body’s primary method of recovering after stressful experiences. By taking the time to get plenty of rest following your procedure, you’ll arm your physique with the necessary fuel to fully recover from your surgery.

You might find that you need an especially high amount of rest in the first couple of days immediately following your procedure.

6.  Don’t Exert Yourself Too Much

Be sure to follow the post operative instructions on limiting exercise until day 11. Anything that increases your heart rate or blood pressure significantly can not only increase swelling but can also increase your bleeding risk.

7.  Quit Smoking and/or Avoid Second Hand Smoke

Smoking and exposure to second hand smoke is well-documented to be harmful to the body in a number of ways and can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
